This week is the 40th anniversary of the release of the original Star Wars, now known as A New Hope, so it’s a great time to share new information about the next Star Wars installment, The Last Jedi. Vanity Fair’s latest issue has a cover story on the eighth episode of the main saga, complete with revealing portraits of characters, old and new, taken by the legendary Annie Leibovitz.
“DJ” (Benicio Del Toro) – Pictured above, this “shady character” is actually unnamed in the movie and “DJ” is his off-screen nickname.
Vice Admiral Holdo (Laura Dern) – This purple-haired woman seen above is a “prominent officer in the Resistance”.

Shown above is a new setting introduced in The Last Jedi called “The Canto Bight”. Writer-director Rian Johnson describes the place, visited by Rose and Finn, as a “Monte Carlo–type environment, a little James Bond–ish, a little To Catch a Thief.” He also acknowledges that while this is the new Mos Eisley Cantina in terms of it featuring all kinds of strange alien creatures, it’s also the total opposite because it’s “ultra-glamour” in contrast to the first movie’s “wretched hive of scum and villainy,” as described in A New Hope, and the franchise and Galaxy’s generally dirty and junky aesthetic.
